Great Wood Community Hall has been at the heart of our village since 1855, now providing a space for events, activities, and social gatherings. Over the years, it has served many purposes, and while it remains a vital part of the community, the building is now in need of refurbishment to ensure it continues to be a welcoming and accessible space for everyone.
The Big Refurb Project is focused on modernising and improving the entire hall, upgrading facilities, reinstating original features, and making it more energy-efficient. With a fresh, inviting space, we can continue to bring people together for generations to come.
Great Wood Community Hall is run by a dedicated team of volunteers who work hard to keep this space thriving. We rely on community support to keep the hall thriving, from organising events to carrying out essential repairs.
Thanks to funding, we've already started work on key areas, including the History Room refurbishment, but there’s still much more to do.
Every contribution, big or small, helps us move closer to preserving this historic building while making it a vibrant and welcoming hub for our community.
Thanks to Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, the History Room Refurbishments project has received £4000.00 from the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
Thanks to funding through Staffordshire Moorlands District Council via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), funded by the government, we’ve been able to start work on our History Room, including a new floor and fresh decoration.
This is just the beginning, and we’re excited to share photos of the refurbishment steps on our website as the project progresses. Along the way, we’ve encountered a few hurdles, but our volunteers have tackled each one with determination.

Our refurbishment journey is far from over, and we need your help to continue improving Great Wood Community Hall. Beyond the work already planned, there are still many areas of the building that need attention.
We aim to refresh the entire space to create a warm, welcoming environment where everyone feels at home. This includes upgrading additional rooms, improving accessibility, and ensuring the building is both functional and inviting for all who use it.
From fresh paint to essential repairs, each improvement will help preserve the hall’s character while making it more practical for daily use. We also plan to update heating and lighting systems to be more energy-efficient, reducing running costs and making the hall more environmentally friendly.
As a volunteer-run charity, we rely on the support of our community to keep Great Wood Community Hall thriving.
Every donation, big or small, makes a difference. Your contribution helps us create a space where people can come together for events, activities, and celebrations for years to come.
We’ve created a donation page through GoodHub where you can support our refurbishment efforts.
Every pound raised goes directly toward improving the hall, helping us reach our goal of transforming this cherished building into a vibrant, welcoming hub for everyone.
At Great Wood Community Hall, we’ve always known that the building holds a lot of history, but recently, we’ve had a rare chance to glimpse a stunning hidden feature, the beautiful wooden beams above the suspended ceiling.
Originally built as a school in 1855, these beams would have once been fully visible, adding character and charm to the space. Over time, as the building was repurposed, they were concealed, but they remain a stunning part of our heritage.
As part of our long-term renovation plans, we are currently having a full building survey carried out to assess the work needed to maintain and improve the hall for future generations.
We are incredibly grateful to Cllr Buckley, who is generously completing this survey at no cost to us, and we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to Cllr Buckley for his kindness in making this possible.
Thanks to this survey, we’ve had a rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of the stunning original beams hidden above the suspended ceiling. While we always knew they were there, this is the first time we’ve had the chance to see them in their full beauty.
The survey is just the beginning. We are working hard to raise funds for The Big Refurb, which will help us restore and enhance the hall, ensuring it remains a welcoming and functional space for everyone.
Our plans include much-needed repairs, improvements to accessibility, and upgrades that will allow us to host even more community events, from social gatherings to large-scale celebrations.
If you’d like to support our efforts, you can find out more and donate via our GoodHub fundraising page.
Every little bit helps, and together, we can make sure Great Wood Community Hall continues to serve our community for many years to come.
