This December, we’re proud to host The Longest Yarn 2: Britain at War, a stunning exhibition of knitted and crocheted wartime scenes.
From the declaration of war in 1939 through to VE Day in 1945, this 3D wool art display brings history to life with colour, creativity and heart.
With over 80 panels created by crafters from across the UK and beyond, there’s so much to see and take in. The exhibition is suitable for all ages, perfect for families, history lovers, or anyone who loves a good yarn
A typical visit lasts 60–90 minutes, and you’re welcome to soak up the atmosphere (and the details!) at your own pace.
At busy times, we may ask you to stick to 90 minutes so everyone gets a chance to experience the exhibition.
Suitable for all ages (under 16s with an adult)
Accessible: Wheelchairs welcome, accessible toilet and baby change available
Blue badge parking at the hall only (all other parking at Old Road car park, ST10 4EG)
Well-behaved dogs on leads welcome
Café on site: Grab a cuppa and a slice of cake during your visit
Volunteers are needed to help run our café, set up and close down the hall, and generally keep things running smoothly.
Even a couple of hours makes a real difference. If you love meeting people, enjoy being part of a community event, or want to get involved in something special, we’d love to hear from you.

The Longest Yarn 2: Britain at War is a stunning exhibition created by artist Tansy Forster and a talented community of knitters and crocheters from across the UK and beyond.
This unique project brings together 3D wool art panels and life-size knitted figures, each handcrafted to tell the story of how Britain navigated World War II.
From the declaration of war to VE Day, the exhibition covers key events like D-Day, the King’s Speech, The Blitz, and the work of the Home Guard and Women’s Land Army. Every piece is lovingly crafted, representing real people and moments from the era.
The first Longest Yarn installation, a spectacular 80 metre D-Day depiction toured the UK and America, inspiring people of all ages.
