Throughout December, thousands of people visited Great Wood Community Hall to see The Longest Yarn 2: Britain at War.
We welcomed local residents, families, schools, community groups, and visitors from further afield. Many returned more than once, bringing others with them, and spending time in the hall café, talking, remembering, and connecting.
The response from the community was overwhelming, and the exhibition became a real talking point across the village and beyond.
The Longest Yarn 2: Britain at War is an exhibition created by artist Tansy Forster and a community of knitters and crocheters from across the UK and beyond.
The project brings together detailed 3D wool art panels and life sized knitted figures, each one carefully made to reflect real people, places, and moments from World War II.
Scenes include everyday life on the Home Front, evacuation, the Blitz, D Day, the work of the Home Guard, and the experiences of women during wartime. Every piece is handcrafted, with attention to historical detail and storytelling.
Hosting The Longest Yarn 2 marked an important moment for Great Wood Community Hall.
The exhibition brought new people into the building, encouraged conversations between generations, and reminded many why local community spaces matter. For some, it was their first visit to the hall. For others, it was a return after many years.
The success of the exhibition has helped shape future plans for the hall
We are incredibly grateful to everyone who visited, volunteered, shared the event, or simply stopped for a chat.
